Hearts and Mines began as a way for Afghanistan veteran Matt Luloff to cope with his tumultuous war memories through creating music. Alongside drummer Jason Watts, Luloff created a pure alternative rock sound that emphasized musicality while maintaining a hard edge. The addition of bassist Rob Hanlon and keyboardist Michael Pineault finalized the band’s lineup in early 2011. While the musical content can seem dark at first, the musicians’ sharp riffs and clean vocal harmonies provide perfect concurrence to the powerful and politically charged lyrics, all written by Luloff.

With the help of producer Jordon Zadorozny (Sam Roberts Band, Melissa Auf der Maur), Hearts and Mines entered the studio and recorded their first full-length album, Find Your Way, which was released in 2011. The album quickly gained popularity within their Ottawa home base, and aided by Hearts and Mines’ interactive and uplifting live shows, helped establish the band as an up-and-coming Canadian success.

2012 has proven to be a big year for the band. Hearts and Mines were the runner-ups in the LiVE 88.5 Big Money Shot Contest, which netted them $40,000 towards music development, courtesy of NewCap Radio. The band headed directly into the studio to write and record their much anticipated follow-up to 2011’s Find Your Way. With the Big Money Shot, Hearts and Mines also had the opportunity to work with legendary producer Terry Brown (Rush) on their track “Enough of This”, which was featured on their next EP.

Their newest release, a five-song EP titled Panic, debuted in May of 2012. Hearts and Mines took a different approach and teamed up with James Robertson (Down With Webster) when producing their single “Fast Times”, which achieved favorable critics and airplay on Live 88.5.

Showing no signs of slowing down, Hearts and Mines are currently the studio, once again teaming up with Zadorozny to produce their next EP. With plans of embarking on a tour in the near future, Hearts and Mines are definitely keeping themselves busy. Through their continuous hard work and undeniable musicianship, Hearts and Mines will undoubtedly bring their fresh sound to the forefront of the Canadian music scene.
